Despite being an outspoken critic of the Iranian government, the ex-president has managed to avoid house arrest and imprisonment. Although Ahmadinejad is considered by many to be no longer relevant in domestic politics, he refuses to fade away. In recent months, there have been talks that the two-term ex-president is planning to run in the Iranian presidential elections. The speculation seemingly started when Ahmadinejad began to make a series of provincial visits three months before the February parliamentary elections.
Some analysts assumed that the campaign-like visits were attempts to lobby support for other candidates or perhaps himself. One popular post is a deepfake of Ahmadinejad as Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons, as she delivers a fiery speech.
Another popularly shared deepfake depicts Ahmadinejad as Bob Ross, the late American painter and host of The Joy of Painting, a popular program on Iranian state media. Remember what a better era it was? The Ahmadinejad years were marred by the strangling of the middle class, in part due to his mismanagement, inflationary economic policies and multilateral sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.
Some memes portray the traditionally bearded Ahmadinejad with a mustache and sunglasses, which caught enough attention for Tehran daily, Hamshahri , to publish a piece on August 14 explaining that the images were photoshopped. He became a member of the Revolutionary Guards and took part in the Iran—Iraq war — After the war he had a number of public positions, latterly as Governor General of Ardabil Province —7 , after which he returned to Tehran as a university lecturer.
He re-emerged politically as a very conservative mayor of Tehran in , reversing moderate reforms made by his predecessors. He was relatively unknown at the start of the presidential election, campaigning on issues of social justice domestically and on Iran's right to develop its civil nuclear power programme. He won the final run-off against Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani who had been President —97 , gaining nearly two-thirds of the vote.
He was the first non-cleric for 24 years to become President, although much power still rests with the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Domestically he stopped the process of reform and imposed restrictions, such as the banning of Western music.
However, he faced severe economic problems. By the end of inflation had reached 30 per cent and the dramatic fall in oil prices was harming the economy. Internationally, he has caused much controversy. Trending 1. Fiona Hill: U. Latest Analysis. Andrew Connelly. Or are they? The Month in World Photos.
