Just before he could get into the box, he was clipped from behind by George Friend. The referee…waved it away. A couple of minutes later, Neves was sent off for a second booking after a poor tackle.
Now down to 9 men, it was a case of being organised, disciplined, and hanging on. And my word, we did it. Even though Patrick Bamford scored a late goal to give Middlesbrough a glimmer, we clung on to the priceless three points. There were fantastic scenes at full time, as Wolves manager Nuno, captain Conor Coady, and the entire playing squad celebrated in front of the away end.
I think they realised the significance of it. Fairly easy, as the coaches were parked outside the away end. We left the Riverside at 8pm, and were back at Molineux by pm. A long day, but worth it. The kind of game which puts you completely through the ringer as a supporter.
I think I must have experienced every emotion during the game, elation, anger, frustration, joy, pride, and everything in between! As we all surmised on the way home, it will be one of the games we remember at the end of the season, and for a long time to come. I enjoyed my first trip to Teesside. Whilst the Riverside is not the best ground in the division, in terms of matchday experience, it offers a nice concourse, fantastic range of food and drink, nice facilities and a really good view from your seat.

Disabled facilities. Stadium Tours. Club links. Riverside Stadium Middlesbrough Feedback. Steve Hartley Doing the 92 22nd August Ayresome Park Gates Despite the lack of established eating facilities as listed in the guide, for match-day countless burger vans had appeared, and the one we chose to sample was serving up the most gorgeous grub.
With hindsight, we should have gone back for more… And so attention turned to the game in prospect. Some matches with a derby element seem to be recapturing a degree of attraction to supporters; there was a full house at Deepdale last season for our first round clash with Blackpool, and the Leeds-Bradford match I noticed had a large attendance this week too In fact, the few thousand in the "singing section" in the South Stand never let up all night, and with the drums and the flags waving certainly again left a positive impression that sufficient 'Boro fans were up for a cup clash even if it was against lower league opposition.
Fortunately, there were other things in the programme to read whilst that farce was displayed… Once the match got underway, it soon developed into an intriguing contest. Riverside Stadium In fact, it would be the second half before the game really erupted into life, with first 'Boro taking the lead with a well worked free-kick, then Preston equalising with an equally great set-piece move, only for 'Boro to take the lead again 3 minutes later.
I felt the home fans was extremely friendly, nearly every 'Boro fan i spoke to ask the same question "… So what time did you leave this morning" What you thought on seeing the ground, first impressions of away end then other sides of the Riverside stadium? Adam Chard Bristol City 22nd August The Famous Chicken Parmo I had a wander around the outside of the stadium, which was very impressive, but all the while had a desolate feeling to it, tucked away amongst waste ground and salvage yards.
View From The Away Section Boro threw on ex City favourite Albert Adomah, who received a standing ovation and had his name chanted by the travelling City fans — despite the fact he was attacking our goal! So overall, a fantastic away trip: nice food, good stadium, great result! Michael Pala Doing the 92 12th September Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: I went into the club shop before walking back to the town centre to collect my car. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: A trip to Middlesbrough is definitely worth it!
Martin Sheffield Wednesday 28th December I hadn't been to an away game for a while and I was meeting up with friends, old and new. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: A bit hairy going through the underpasses but with 28, people all leaving and most heading back the same way, to be expected really.
Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Apart from the result, it was a good day out with friends and a decent game and atmosphere. Daniel Ainsworth Blackburn Rovers 6th February Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Great day with a great result and I would certainly return!
Lee Sockett Stoke City fan 13th August Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: Really quick getaway by the official coaches within 20 minutes of the final whistle, with another Police escort back out of town. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Middlesbrough was a good away day for the first game of the season, would recommend vesting the Riverside Stadium for a good sing song and banter with home fans.
Tony Newman Tottenham Hotspur 24th September Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: A gentle steady walk back to Middlesbrough Railway Station — followed the herd….
Summary of overall thoughts of the day out Excellent, I would recommend a visit to the Riverside Stadium to all away fans. Peter Bassett Tottenham Hotspur 24th September Comment on the game itself, atmosphere, stewards, pies, facilities etc. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: Pretty straight forward to get away from the ground. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Although a long day — very rewarding!
Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: A fairly slow walk back to the town centre as many fans were heading in that direction. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Apart from the result we had a good day out especially my mate, who's a Boro fan. Will Donaghue Chelsea 20th November Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: The Riverside was a great stadium to visit! Phil Bowmen Liverpool 14th December Simple enough driving ourselves.
Parked at our hotel for the night in the town centre. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: Leaving the ground was simple enough. Took about 20 minutes to walk back into the town centre.
Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: An okay with a great result. Rob Pickett Oxford United 18th February I like the Riverside as a stadium. Great views and a full house generates a great atmosphere. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: Bit of a nightmare. It took 40 minutes before we got going back on the roads. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: A great day of football — a real cup tie. Jack Talbot Sunderland 26th April Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: Getting away was no bother, I managed to get pictures with three of our players and getting out was absolutely no trouble at all.
Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: A poor game but a cracking night. Stephen Welch Manchester City 30th April The Riverside Stadium is similar to a lot of new grounds, Sunderland, Southampton etc..
Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: As I said, it took a while so will park at the away end next time to get away quicker. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Could have been worse if we had lost, so have to be happy with the draw especially with Pep playing a formation. I love these far up north away games, because me and my good lady can take the time to make a whole weekend away from the hustle and bustle of London life by takin g in the delights and tranquility of the North Yorkshire countryside.
We've been to the Riverside Stadium a few times now, but as I stated above, it's just good to go to a game way up north.
I t hink on this occasion we were exceptionally lucky with our drive from West London, as there were virtually no traffic hold ups. We left home at 7. The Riverside Stadium is very easy to find, and is well sign posted once you come off the motorway. As for car parking, there's plenty of free street parking on Cargo Fleet Road, just follow the signs saying 'Secure Safe Parking' this will take you to Cargo Fleet Road….
Going to the ground, just turn to your left when you leave the car park, then it's virtually a sharp left again into a small walkway tunnel, you can clearly see the ground once you're out of the tunnel then it's only a couple of minutes walk to the away end.
As we got to the Riverside Stadium earlier than expected, we headed for the Dr Browns pub. From the car park turn right, go through a walkway tunnel right in front of you, this will bring you out to a McDonalds with Dr Browns situated just behind… Only a five minute walk from the car park. It's a cracking boozer, music was a bit to loud for my liking, in saying that the beer was decent, the staff were top draw and the Middlesbrough fans were very very friendly, obviously more Boro than QPR fans, everyone mixed with each other…..
Been here before. I think the Riverside Stadium is looking a bit tired now but still a good ground with a cracking atmosphere… love the Ayersome Park gates outside that capture the nostalgic look from the old ground. Possibly the best football stewards up there with the Cardiff City stewards I've come across. My wife is a vegetarian, all they had to offer inside was a selection of meat pies….
The catering steward overheard my wife having a moan about the lack of veggie options. She told my wife to come back at half time and she'd have a veggie pie for her. True to her word, the catering steward had a hot cheese 'n onion pie waiting for my wife, on top of that she didn't charge her for the pie… how nice was that.!
The game was brilliant, even though we were on the end of a loss, I was more than delighted with the way QPR took the game to Boro…. I'd say we deserved a draw, especially as we hit the post in the final moments…. The Boro support to our left was rocking, I'll call them their Ultras, they really supported their team… we only had maybe , but all the same our vocal support for Rangers more than made up for our lack in numbers. Again I say, decent stewards, the concourse is very spacious, no complaints about the away fans facilities at all.
Comment on getting away from the ground after the game :. The gate was near on 25, so getting away from the vicinity of the Riverside was a bit on the slow side. As we were staying in North Yorkshire, and with the rest of the weekend in front of us, I wasn't in any particular rush to get away.
It was roughly 20 minutes once we got back to the car-park, that was to get clear of the football traffic, I have definitely been in far worse hold up's at away grounds. I found out the next day, that the third Middlesbrough goal had gone out of play before their player crossed with the assist for them to score….
The referee and assistant had missed it… deep sigh. That aside, we had a great day in Middlesbrough, I'm biased, a or a I just feel would've been a more fair result on reflection of how we took the game to them… so, good weather, decent home supporters, good pies haha, and very kind and helpful stewards, only downside from the QPR perspective was the result…..
Shaun Leeds United 2nd March Pretty easy. We tried to engage with some home fans in a friendly snowball fight but there were no takers!
As with all new grounds the view is great and the seating is comfortable. The game was great if you were a Home fan! We were outplayed which you can take but there was little effort from our team which was harder to take resulting in a section of the away fans booing the team at the end of the game. As for the stewards they were pretty relaxed throughout the match. Comment on getting away from the ground after the game:.
After the 15 minute walk to the car it was a pretty easy drive but then heading back to Newcastle meant I was going against the flow of most of the vehicles. Despite the severe weather away fans turned up for this televised game.
Unfortunately, the 11 players failed to turn up which made it a dismal 90 minutes. Norman Wilson Millwall 24th August I have visited before. The ground is easy to get to from the railway station.
I hoped for a win and I wanted to enjoy again the unique Parmo. My journey from Cambridgeshire involved a drive to and from Retford as there no trains running from London. The Parmo was good! There was a poor attendance from both sides. Millwall mainly because of no trains from London. We should have won but we were not ruthless enough, the game ending In particular, I and another fan have difficulty with the steps going down the stand to the exit. This was dealt with sympathy rather than aggression that I have experienced elsewhere.
A long day out but a great welcome and a point away from home. The toilets even have soap and paper towels. If you treat people well it pays off. Brian Moore Millwall 24th August I was staying in Hartlepool on the Marina for a long weekend so no early get up for the match.
Needed a good team reaction after the hammering by Fulham in the midweek. Cafe 23 for a fry up. Highly recommended. Will look elsewhere next visit. One of the better of the newer cadre of stadia. The away end facilities and views were fine. Tip, the burger van nearest the away end is recommended. Still got a point with a late equaliser but two dropped in reality.
Both sides did well in the searing heat. An easy walk back to the bank holiday chaos ravaged train service but again as I was only going to Hartlepool it was an annoyance rather than a disaster. A dcent enough day out. Phil Reading 14th September Comment on getting away from the ground after the game: A brisk 20 minutes walk back to my car in the car park but got away really quickly and started heading south.
Summary of overall thoughts of the day out: Other than the result it was a great day. Neil Dykes Doing the 92 11th January I had not been to the Riverside since and was going with my son and daughter to do the The journey was easy enough from Leeds. Straight up the A19, A66 and the Riverside Stadium is not far off the main road. We picked our tickets up and then headed to the Club Shop to buy a badge and a programme.
Then had a walk around the stadium. By now it was about a quarter to two but still not very busy. A very pleasant atmosphere all in all. The people who we talked to were very friendly. Even at the car park telling me I would get a ticket if I had parked in the blue-lined section.
The ground is very clean and easy to access. I like the fact it has ticket offices at each corner. Inside it is like a smaller version of Old Trafford. My kids bought chips with curry sauce inside the ground, both got plenty. The game was good. The first half belonged to Middlesbrough who should have been more than up at half time. The second half probably belonged to Derby County.
The game finished The atmosphere inside was very good. Getting away from the ground after was okay. A steady walk back to the car.
No real queues and I was back home by pm. A very enjoyable day. I was surprised at how easy getting to and from the game was and will go back. Aimee Henry Wolverhampton Wanderers 18th September Comment on getting away from the ground after the game. Summary of overall thoughts of the day out. Adrian Hurst Sheffield Wednesday 18th September I have never previously seen Sheffield Wednesday at the Riverside.
I am old enough to remember being at Ayrsome Park in when Boro won , so looking for some kind of belated revenge! As I now live in South Wales it was a A couple of drinks in Doctor Brown's where both sets of fans mixed well. Lots of friendly banter and a mutual dislike of Leeds! I thought that the ground looked quite smart, both outside and in. Could have done with more turnstiles, four was not enough coming up to kick off time with a full away following. When we score four times in the first 35 minutes it can hardly be classed as a bad game!
A good atmosphere from both sets of fans at the start, but understandably the Boro fans were somewhat shell shocked as they conceded twice in the first six minutes.
The toilets were clean but too small for a large following. I didn't have any issues with the stewards who seemed happy to be low profile. The car park is more or less around the corner from the A66 dual carriageway and after a few minutes due to the high volume of traffic, we were on our way back down south.
Had an excellent awayday as its not every day that we win away! No problems with the Boro fans at all and the stewards and police were very helpful. Tim Hinchliffe 17th October Second away day of the season and was hoping to kick on and get a first win away. The Riverside is seen as a big stadium so looking forward to seeing it for ourselves. Went on the train from Sleaford and an easy trip with a half hour wait at Doncaster. There is a good food court at the shopping centre at Doncaster which is recommended.
Easy 15 minute walk to the ground straight down one road so very stress free. Went to Dr Browns but had food at the Maccies next door first. Dr Browns is a bit frayed around the edges but both set of supporters mixed well and only three pounds for a pint of Strongbow, no real ales though. Be aware on our visit the pub was only taking cash. What you thought on seeing the ground, first impressions of away end then other sides of the stadium?
Easy walk to the ground and plenty of food vans on the way if needed. It's an impressive looking ground and a nice touch having the original gates at the front. Nice away end and good to be able to " have a discussion" with the home fans. Stewards were really relaxed and we were able to choose where we sat and were able to stand throughout as should be the law at any away day! Good concourse and easy to get a drink, good sized toilets as well.
As a Posh fan I am used to disappointment but no shots on target and no game plan was something else. More details. Around half a mile from the stadium is the Jurys Inn. It has a health club with a pool, a restaurant and bar and self-parking.
The Holiday Inn is just under a mile from the ground and has a business centre, meeting rooms and self-parking. With friendly, welcoming staff and a menu that will suit all tastes, Dr Browns is an excellent place to head to before you go to the match.
As the closest pub to the stadium you can expect The Navigation to get pretty busy on matchdays. It's not somewhere to take the kids but it will have a great atmosphere and the manager is very popular with customers, so you can expect a friendly welcome along with a great pint.
