It brought back a couple of regular Bond characters who would put their own stamp. It was also a tribute to the Bond films of the past since it was the film released on the anniversary of Dr. No and gave us the old Aston-Martin.
Now I think all of them looks more or less the same. Movies like Taken, and specially the Kingsman movies, take the Bond genre and mix it with talented actors and brilliant ideas and evolve, but Bond seems to take every step backwards instead. All this imho ofc. Skyfall has been my favourite Bond since it was released. This is a great list and I agree with everything here and more — a most enjoyable Bond movie on many levels!
The biggest problem I have with the film is that there seems to be no motive for Bond to do what he does beyond seeing M as a substitute Mother figure. I believe humanizing Bond by making him a washed up drunk was a mistake. From there, the film resembles a Bond film only so much as it features characters with names from the universe and a bunch of grown-worthy call backs to early Bond movies clearly there to appease longtime fans. I vehemently concur, however late I may be.
I loved Casino as well as several of the classics. Skyfall blends the best of everything: stunning visuals, delightful British dryness, well-timed banter, and the best villain ever in Javier Bardem. Most beautiful sequence in the history of the series, bar none. Very unique and highest grossing Bond movie ever! No arguments there. I love all Bond movies but Skyfall is the best of them all. Besides the forsaken due to a brilliant Silva plan island, the only other action locations are England and Scotland, hardly exotic by Bond standards. Daniel Craig has portrayed the most realistic James Bond yet. Which leads me to:. While most Bond superlatives are reserved for Sean Connery smoothest, sexiest, etc.
He makes you legitimately care about the man behind the number for perhaps the first time ever. Grittier, darker pieces rooted in reality. All rights reserved. The Villain is Outstanding Much has been made of the nature of the Bond villain and their customary over-the-top schemes.
While played with admirable gusto by Albert Finney, the character was once considered for the original actor, Sean Connery. The Skyfall estate's grand and empty halls suggest a diminished glory that makes it the natural endpoint for the movie.
Even the action here is tactile and brutal in a way the series rarely gets, while still reaching operatic heights. As night begins to fall, Silva and his men arrive for what may well be one of the longest extended action scenes in the series. Mendes designs it for maximum suspense and excitement, but by the end has reached a certain exhaustion - all that's left is Bond and Silva duking it out in the burnt remains of the estate.
Bond defeats Silva but ultimately failed his mission in protecting M. In her dying words to Bond, she is tender but unsentimental, a fitting farewell for Judi Dench , who had played the character since 's Goldeneye.
Where some James Bond films end with the notion of retirement or some kind of escape from the life, Skyfall works in the opposite direction - early retirement into the greatest trial of Bond's life. The movie ends with him reporting for duty, ready for what comes next. The origin story started in Casino Royale has finally been completed. The suspense and cinematic showmanship Skyfall achieves is unparalleled in the franchise.
Even beyond the stunning photography, its action scenes are spectacular and well-paced, with consequences to every missed jab and a real sense of stakes. While reducing a complex plot of geopolitical cyberterrorism to one man's long-held grudge feels somewhat out of character for the Craig movies, Skyfall 's story is thematically ambitious.
It does more than pay lip service to the questions of what James Bond means to the modern world - at every turn his effectiveness and destructive capability is interrogated again.
Despite that, the entertainment value of the movie is never sacrificed. Skyfall positions Bond as both an aging man on the verge of retirement and as someone just now stepping into the classic Bond iconography. Even beyond its great, memorable villain, the acting by Craig and Dench is strong and substantive. Mendes found a way to make a James Bond movie for the '10s in every sense: playful but not campy, serious but not gritty. In doing this, the movie becomes one of the best the series has to offer.
Home News. Though the character has had a supporting role in previous films, Dench is "all but the co-star" of Skyfall , playing the British spy organization's troubled boss as a character "far more complex and sympathetic than we expect in this series. Skyfall goes back to the franchise's roots Departing from the premises behind newer action movie franchises like the Mission: Impossible or Bourne movies, the creative team behind Skyfall has "smartly reset the Bond clock all the way back to , before the wild gadgets and ever-more-improbably plots took over," says Stephen Whitty at the New Jersey Star-Ledger.
With Skyfall , the Bond series is letting other spy franchises have the "truly outrageous" stunts and gadgets and embracing its characters — pointing in a direction simultaneously "new to young fans and as old as From Russia With Love. And it embraces the modern era Skyfall may take pains to pay homage to a bygone era of films, but it also feels "more seriously connected to real-world concerns than any previous entry," says Todd McCarthy at The Hollywood Reporter.
The Bond series has transitioned away from the "colorful megalomaniacal villains" of its old films and into "the vexing world of shadowy terrorists and cyber warfare. Skip to header Skip to main content Skip to footer The List.
